In our new blog series International testimonials we interview students and staff at Hanken with roots from all over the world. First up we have Ayesha Ahmed. Ayesha is doing her master’s degree in marketing and management and she is from Pakistan.

What is your favorite tradition from Pakistan?

Ayesha Ahmed

My favorite tradition from Pakistan is that of “chai” (pronounced ch-aye). Chai refers to milk tea which is made by brewing tea leaves, milk, sugar and water, but what it really feels like is a warm mug of happiness to be shared with your loved ones. When Pakistanis have guests over, serving chai is a must! It is usually served after a meal, during which everyone sits together, talks, and bonds over the warm beverage. However, it can also be served by itself accompanied by some light snacks, such as cookies. If someone invites you over for chai, it means they truly value your company and want to spend more time with you.

The beauty of chai is that it is season-friendly, tastes great in all kinds of weather, and can be enjoyed at any time of the day, though perhaps not too late at night due to its caffeine content. It is more than just a hot beverage; it is a symbol of warmth, togetherness, and meaningful human connection.

What surprised you the most with Finland or Finnish people?

I was most surprised by how kind Finnish people are. Having travelled to many different regions of the world, I have found Finns to be among the most polite and helpful people. I have often seen them go out of their way to support others, especially those who are new here, by helping them understand local norms and settle in more easily. Many times, Finns have offered to help even when I did not ask for it. This culture of quiet generosity and reliability is truly admirable and makes living in Finland feel welcoming and inclusive.

Can you share your favourite recipe from Pakistan?

Pakistani cuisine is known for its rich flavours and aromatic spices. My favourite recipe is definitely biryani, a rice and meat dish infused with a perfect balance of tangy, spicy, and savoury flavours. It is made by layering fragrant basmati rice with marinated meat, fried onions and tomatoes, and a blend of aromatic spices, then slow-cooked to allow all the flavours to come together. Some variations also include boiled eggs, potatoes or fresh herbs, which add more depth and texture to the dish. Biryani is often served with raita (yogurt sauce) and fresh salad, making it a complete and satisfying meal.

If you had to give us one reason why to visit Pakistan, what would it be?

This is a tough one because I have to choose between the lovely food and the beautiful sceneries. If I had to choose one reason to visit Pakistan, it would be the incredible natural beauty and diversity. The country is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes, including K2, the second-highest mountain in the world. The weather is also very inviting, with beautiful summers and mild winters, making it perfect for outdoor activities throughout the year. From towering peaks and glaciers in the northern region, to the serene beaches in the south, Pakistan offers a wonderful blend of adventure, delicious food and culture. In my photo, I can be seen sitting on a mountaintop after a rewarding hike in Malam Jabba, in the northern region of Pakistan.

Tell us one artist from Pakistan that we have to listen to

My favorite Pakistani artist is Ali Sethi, a contemporary Pakistani singer famous for blending classical, folk, and modern styles. Not only is he a talented musician, but he is also incredibly smart, holding a degree from Harvard. Ali Sethi is a perfect example of a modern-classical icon, and he gained much popularity during the Covid lockdowns by keeping the community engaged and motivated by hosting daily Instagram Live sessions, where he would interact with viewers and perform live. A great song to start with is “Pasoori”, which became an international hit and beautifully captures Pakistan’s vibrant musical culture. His music is creative, soulful, and offers a fresh perspective on traditional sounds.
