What is your favourite tradition from Trinidad and Tobago?

Stefan Santokhie

Trinidad and Tobago is a multicultural nation with many important religious and cultural traditions, but nothing unites the country quite like Carnival. Known as The Greatest Show on Earth, Trinidad’s Carnival is the world’s most authentic, vibrant, and energetic carnival celebration. The highlight is the grand street parade on Carnival Monday and Tuesday (16–17 February 2026), although festivities begin shortly after Christmas and culminate on Ash Wednesday.

During Carnival, the streets come alive with masqueraders in spectacular costumes, dancing to the rhythms of soca and calypso in an electrifying atmosphere. The celebrations also include J’ouvert at dawn, lively soca parties, the Panorama steelband finals, and unforgettable local food experiences such as doubles and bake and shark. Whether you take part as a masquerader or experience it as a spectator, Carnival is an unforgettable cultural experience filled with joy, freedom, and a strong sense of community.

What surprised you the most with Finland or Finnish people?

What surprised me the most with Finland was the honesty of the people. It is a high trust society that values efficiency. If you lose things, you will either find it back when you left it or it will be returned to you. Interacting with government bodies was easy and straightforward. Persons at the government bodies were very helpful. As for Finnish people, I found the stereotype of them being quiet and reserved to be more myth than fact. The Finns I interacted with were very curious, friendly, helpful and they are open to learning more about different cultures, countries and backgrounds. They would approach you and strike up conversations. I have made some amazing Finnish friends and have even hosted two Finns in Trinidad and Tobago. They spent a week on each island and they loved it.

Can you share your favourite recipe from Trinidad and Tobago?

My favorite recipe from Trinidad and Tobago? That is a tough one. Because of the cultural influences of West Africa, India, Syria, Lebanon, China, Britain, France and Spain, our food is quite multifaceted and those diverse cultures merged to produce culinary products that snare the tastebuds and produce bold flavours which make you yearn for more. Roti, doubles, callalloo, curried meats and seafood and souse are local favorites. My personal favorite is pelau. It is a one pot dish which consists of chicken which is seasoned with fresh herbs, which is stewed in a pot. Pigeon peas and rice are then put in and finally, coconut milk is introduced to cook everything. It is usually served with a simple side salad and some fresh squeezed lime juice.

If you had to give us one reason why to visit your Trinidad and Tobago, what would it be?

I could give you several reasons to visit. We have historical landmarks, natural attractions, world-renowned festivals and some of the best food in the world. But I would say, spending the day on Pigeon Point Beach in Tobago and doing the Reef Tour is a must for all visitors. The reef tour starts with a trip to the coral reefs that are present in Tobago. You can then swim in Nylon Pool and finally enjoy the local food and drink on No Mans Land.

Tell us one artist from Trinidad and Tobago that we have to listen to:

My favorite Trinidad and Tobago artist is Kes. He has some bangers for this year’s Carnival. Take a listen to Rum and Coca Cola and Cocoa Tea from Kes. His music and videos do a stand-up job of conveying our culture and vibe.

Is there something else you would like to share about Trinidad and Tobago?

Trinidad and Tobago is a melting pot of different cultures. This is reflected in our historical sites, our food, our culture, festivals and vibe of the islands. There is something for everyone. Whether you into relaxing on the white sands and blue seas of Tobago, hiking in the Northern Range of Trinidad, fishing off the west coast or taking in the historical sites and festivals all over the islands, you will always find something you enjoy and remember for a lifetime. But most importantly, the people are just as warm and welcoming as the weather. So, visit sweet T and T. You will be glad you did.
