The Nordic countries together with Canada and the USA are launching a NordForsk call on the sustainable development of the Arctic. The call is two-stage, and the deadline for pre-proposals is 4 June 2024.

The main aim of the call is to support research collaboration among participating countries in the Arctic region to bring forward new knowledge on how to ensure the sustainable development of the Arctic.

All project consortia must include partners from research-performing organisations in at least three Nordic countries. The objective is to jointly fund interdisciplinary research projects of the highest international quality, with potential for impact and societal relevance, and with clear added value from multilateral collaboration.

The call has no thematic priorities, but three keywords can inspire applicants when developing their research ideas into proposals: Security, Natural Resources, and/or Societal Changes. Only truly interdisciplinary research will be funded.

In addition, the following aims are central to the call:

  • Interdisciplinarity
  • Sustainable development
  • Arctic Added Value
  • Indigenous perspectives

Funding

Funded research projects have a duration of 3-4 years and a budget in the range of NOK 18-24 million for the Nordic partners. The budget for partners from USA and/or Canada will be in addition to the Nordic budget.

Project funding will be available for the period 2025-2029.

Eligibility

The described research project must include partners from research performing organisations in at least three Nordic countries.

If the project owner is a research organisation in the USA or Canada, the project must appoint a co-host organisation from one of the Nordic countries with which NordForsk enters into a contract concerning the Nordic part of the project.

The project leader must be a qualified researcher (PhD) employed by their host organisations. A researcher may only serve as project leader for one pre-proposal under this call. However, research organisations may be affiliated with more than one pre-proposal.
