The European Research Council (ERC) is the premier European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. It funds creative researchers of any nationality and age, to run projects based across Europe. The ERC has yearly calls for proposals covering all scientific fields.

The ERC’s mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields, based on scientific excellence. The ERC has yearly calls for proposals covering all scientific fields.

The ERC offers 4 core grant schemes: Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants, Advanced Grants and Synergy Grants. With its additional Proof of Concept Grant scheme, the ERC helps grantees to explore the innovation potential of their ideas or research results.

Starting Grant

  • For promising early-career researchers with 2 to 7 years experience since PhD.
  • PIs must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition, and feasibility of their research proposal.
  • Starting Grants may be awarded up to € 1.5 million for a period of 5 years.
  • Call open 10.7.2024-15.10.2024

Consolidator Grant

  • For excellent researchers with 7 to 12 years experience after PhD.
  • For PIs looking to establishing a research team and continuing to develop a successful career in Europe.
  • PIs need to demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.
  • Consolidator Grants may be awarded up to € 2 million for a period of 5 years.
  • Call open 26.9.2024-14.1.2025

Advanced Grant

  • For established research leaders with a recognised track record of research achievements.
  • For leading principal investigators who want long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, ambitious project.
  • Advanced Grants may be awarded up to € 2.5 million for a period of 5 years.
  • Call open 22.5.2025-28.8.2025

Synergy Grant

  • For two to four Principal Investigators to jointly address ambitious research problems that could not be addressed by the individual PIs and their teams working alone.
  • The transformative research funded by Synergy Grants should have the potential of becoming a benchmark on a global scale. 
  • Synergy Grants may be awarded up to a maximum of EUR 10 million for a period of 6 years.
