The Academy Research Fellowship offers early-career researchers the opportunity to apply for funding for a four-year research project. The application is open 15 November 2023 until 17 January 2024.

The Academy Research Fellowship supports early-career researchers on fast career tracks. The funding supports the researchers so that they can increase their competencies and make significant career progress towards more demanding research positions and achieve an established position in the national and international research community. Academy Research Fellows produce high-quality, high-impact research that stimulates scientific renewal.

The Academy Research Fellowship provides researchers with an opportunity to work independently on their research and to contribute to developing the research in their field. Funding is offered for four-year research projects.

Eligibility

To be eligible in this call, the applicant’s first doctoral degree certificate must be dated between 30 September 2016 and 31 January 2022. Extensions to this timeline are only considered for special reasons (pregnancy, family or childcare leave, military service or nonmilitary service, or long-term illness).

The Academy Research Fellowship is intended for a researcher who does not yet hold a permanent and senior research position. Such positions are, for instance, professor, assistant/associate professor, research director and comparable posts. Researchers with a fixed-term position in a university’s tenure-track system may apply.

The PI of the funded project must have a close connection with Finland during the whole funding period. The researchers hired with the funding shall primarily work in Finland.

Funding

Funding is granted for four years. The funding period is 1 September 2024–31 August 2028.

Eligible costs are applicant’s salary, salary costs of research team and other research costs. The funding applied for must not exceed 70% of the total project costs. 

The funding is granted to a Finnish site of research (usually a university or research institute) through which the funding is paid. Before submitting the application, you must agree with the administration at Hanken on the contribution of the site of research to the funding of the project.
