The Green Transition call focuses on energy efficiency in the food systems, on climate and gender perspectives, and on democratic engagement and citizen-involvement in the green transition. Deadline for application is 5 December 2023.

The Green Transition call focuses on central features of our societies, such as equality, democratic engagement, participation, and representation. Moreover, it addresses an urgent need for the Nordic-Baltic region to find more energy efficient and sustainable food systems.

The call provides an opportunity for researchers to investigate different practices within and between the Nordic and Baltic regions, through comparative approaches to identify similarities, differences, and common challenges, and to identify, optimise and recommend best practices.

Each application must address one of the following topics:

1. Energy Efficiency in the Food Systems for a Green Transition

  • Available budget: Minimum NOK 24,9 million.
  • The intention is to fund at least two proposals under this topic, provided a sufficient number of proposals of a quality considered worthy of funding.
  • Project partners that apply for funding under this topic must be from the following countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, and Sweden. Partners from other countries may participate with their own funding.

2. Climate and Gender Perspectives

  • Available budget: Minimum NOK 13,8 million.
  • The intention is to fund at least one proposal under this topic
  • Project partners that apply for funding under this topic must be from the following countries: Finland, Iceland, Lithuania and Sweden. Partners from other countries may participate with their own funding.

3. Democratic Engagement and Citizen-Involvement in Green Transition

  • Available budget: Minimum NOK 48,1 million.
  • Funding for at least four proposals
  • Project partners that apply for funding under this topic must be from the following countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden. Partners from other countries may participate with their own funding.

Funding

Applicants are invited to apply for funding to establish a research project with a budget of maximum NOK 15 million and a duration of up to 3-4 years. 

The projects awarded support will be funded through a virtual common pot, which means that the national funding agencies will fund their respective participants in the funded projects.  The Finnish funder of this call is the Research Council of Finland.

Eligibility

The research project must include partners from research performing organisations in at least three Nordic countries, or at least two Nordic countries and Estonia and/or Lithuania. Nordic-Baltic cooperation is encouraged.

The project leader must be a qualified researcher employed by the host institution.

Project leaders and project partners need to make sure that the proposal fulfils all national eligibility criteria that come in addition to those described in the call text. The project leaders and partners must contact their national contact points in the early phases of the proposal preparations.

Application

Each application must be written in English and submitted to only one of the three topics of the call.

The Project Leader must submit the application form and the annexes on behalf of the research consortium electronically through NordForsk electronically through the NordForsk Call and Application Portal. It must contain all supporting documents as requested below:

  • NordForsk full proposal form as specified in application portal.
  • Research plan (max ten pages, including references). 
  • Management plan (max two pages).
  • Communication and knowledge exchange strategy (max two pages).
  • CV, including a short list of max ten publications (max three pages for Project Leader and max one page for each key researcher).
  • Description of research teams (standard template)
  • Budget specifications (standard templates).
  • Letters of Commitment.
