The Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) Network in collaboration with the CHANSE (Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe) programme have launched a new Joint Research Programme: Crisis – Perspectives from the Humanities. The deadline for outline proposals is 21 September 2023.

Transnational consortia are invited to submit proposals for humanities-led research under the theme “Crisis – Perspectives from the Humanities”. Proposed research may draw upon insights and methodologies from a wide spectrum of arts and humanities disciplines. Although humanities-driven, consortia are able to involve contributions from other research domains where appropriate.

Proposals may explore any conception of crisis across time, any aspect of crisis throughout history, such as epidemics, pandemics, political upheavals, religious conflicts, wars, migrations (in some instances), etc., on both a macro and micro scale.

Proposals may involve investigating a variety of perspectives from one or several of the following sub-themes:

  • Different understandings of crisis
  • Crisis and the human response
  • The representation of crisis

The consortia should be composed of at least four and maximum six Principal Investigators, i.e. partners, eligible to receive funding from four or more different countries participating in the call. Each consortium must also include at least one Associate Partner. A list of eligible countries can be found in the call text.
