The JOO study system"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hello dear readers! Jitesh here, again. Previously I\nhad talked about how learning law at a business school felt like having the\nbest of two different worlds (link to that blog is <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.hanken.fi\/nordicbrilliance\/2020\/02\/10\/the-best-of-both-worlds-studying-law-at-a-business-school\/\">here<\/a>). This time,\nI\u2019d like to talk about a third world that is open to all Hanken students: the\nJOO study system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JOO or Joopas is a flexible study rights system\nbased on an agreement between all Finnish universities. Under this system,\nstudents can include courses from other universities, which are not taught at\ntheir own universities. The <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.eduuni.fi\/pages\/viewpage.action?pageId=112494154\">wiki page<\/a> for the\nJoopas system lists the following universities as a part of the system: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Aalto University<\/li><li><strong>Hanken School of Economics <\/strong><\/li><li>Lappeenranta University of Technology<\/li><li>National Defence College<\/li><li>Tampere  University of Technology<\/li><li>Univeristy of the Arts Helsinki<\/li><li>University of Helsinki<\/li><li>University of Tampere<\/li><li>University of Turku<\/li><li>University of Vaasa<\/li><li>\u00c5bo Akademi<\/li><li>University of Eastern Finland<\/li><li>University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4<\/li><li>Univerosty of Oulu<\/li><li>University of Lapland<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a Hanken student, this system allows you to take\ncourses which are taught at other universities, and to include the credits from\nthose courses in your transcript at Hanken. But the process to apply for the\nflexible study right and to obtain the credits requires a bit of homework, so I\nthought I\u2019ll share with you the details about the process here: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reading up about Joopas. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good starting point is to read Hanken\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hanken.fi\/en\/students\/study-programmes\/courses-open-all-cooperation-studies-moocs-study-modules\/joo-studies-0\">webpage<\/a> which talks\nabout the joopas system. Be sure to make a note of the different deadlines, as\nthe application process to study any course in one semester usually begins much\nin advance, in the previous semester. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Visit the study counsellors<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A visit to the study counsellors is always helpful, as\nthey are always willing to help students with issues they might have about the\ncredit requirements or transcripts etc. And when it comes to the JOO\napplication, the visit is essential! Usually the study counsellors would like\nto know more about why you want to study a course outside Hanken; and also if\nyou have your study plan ready. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;Make a study\nplan<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For master\u2019s degree students applying for the JOO\nright, a study plan of 120 credits is a must, laying down all the subjects that\nthe student plans to study for the duration of the degree, and also how the\nrelevant course outside Hanken fits into the plan, both in terms of credits and\nin terms of how the course for which the student is applying, will help them in\ntheir degree. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Complete all formalities at Hanken:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study counselors may make some requests from the\nstudent, about their study plan or their reasons for choosing to study outside\nHanken. I recommend that the student complete these formalities as early as\npossible because there are additional steps required after the application is\naccepted by Hanken. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Waiting for acceptance from the Finnish university. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next step, after the completion of formalities at\nHanken, is that the study counsellor (or their equivalent person) checks the\nJOO application to see if everything is in order as per their requirements.\nUsually the student would receive an email from the university asking for any\nclarifications or additional requirements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Enrolling in the course!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JOO is essentially a \u201cright to study\u201d, so it does\nnot act as a guarantee that the student will be able to take up the course for\nwhich they enter the JOO process. So it is vital that the student also apply to\nthe course in the internal system of the university where their application has\nbeen accepted. Usually, applying for the course would occur through a portal\nlike weboodi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Completion and transfer of credits. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the student successfully completes the course, it\nagain becomes the student\u2019s prerogative to apply to get the study credits (and\ngrades) back to Hanken. This process also does not happen automatically! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How I had done this: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had first become aware of the JOO study application\nsystem because I wanted to study Competition law and such a course was not\noffered at Hanken. I found out that the University of Helsinki\u2019s faculty of Law\noffered such a course which would begin around March 2020. So to enroll myself\nin that course, I had applied through the JOO system around October 2019. I\nwent through all the seven steps listed above and now I have the credits for\nthe same course registered in my own weboodi! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process might seemed a bit daunting to begin with,\nbut the study counsellors at Hanken and the JOO coordinator at the University\nof Helsinki were really cooperative and friendly, and so it was pretty\nstraightforward in the end! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hope reading all of this was useful for you, dear\nreader!
