In today\u2019s\nblog, I would love to share with you guys about my interesting career choice \u2013\nHumanitarian Logistics and how did I end up studying this major at Hanken\nSchool of Economics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I bet that\nthe term \u201cHumanitarian Logistics\u201d (HUMLOG) or \u201cHumanitarian Supply Chain\nManagement (HSCM)\u201d causes a huge confusion among if not all, then most of you. Initially,\nmany of my friends asked me whether if it is related to the human resources\nmanagement (HRM) side of Logistics\/SCM, and there are some others even wondered\nwhether if it is a fancy term for \u201chuman trafficking\u201d. Well, the answers are \u201cno\u201d\nand \u201cabsolutely no\u201d to both questions since my field of study is much broader,\nmore intriguing, and humane than what was being asked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alright, let\nme sort this out and browse you through the concept of HUMLOG in the simplest\npossible way from my understanding. Now, try to imagine: if your city has just\nbeen hit by a tsunami, most of shops, supermarkets, hospitals, and other\ncritical infrastructures including electricity, telecommunication networks, and\nprobably the clean water supply within the city are destroyed by the killer\nwaves, even your home \u2013 your shelter is gone by the struck of this disaster.\nThen the questions here are: How are you going to sustain yourself without the\nsupply of daily necessities? Where will you stay during this dark time when\nyour home is not there anymore? How are you going to reach out to your\nrelatives in neighboring areas when the communication network is down?\nDifficult to figure out on your own at this critical moment and time, isn\u2019t it?\nYet, this is exactly the case where humanitarian logistics comes to the rescue\n\u2013 when all regular supply chain networks and operations are paralyzed and\ngrounded to halt. In technical terms, the processes of humanitarian logistics are\nfundamentally the planning, implementing, and controlling the efficient,\ncost-effective flow and storage of goods, material, information, and financial\ninstruments (cash) from the point of origin to the point of consumption, or\n\u201cin-and-out the affected area\u201d, with the aim of relieving the suffering of\naffected people.
\nYou see, it\u2019s not at all perplexing, yet incredibly interesting, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my\nfirst course of Supply Chain Management at bachelor study, the moment I\nrealized that I am going down this career path was when those questions\nrevolving around the movement of goods and information among multiple actors\nwithin the supply chain and the science behind this operation just kept\nlingering in my curious mind. On top of that, I have always been eager to\ncontribute to a greater cause than myself. Therefore, the study of HUMLOG,\nwhich specializes more in the field of disaster relief rather than commercial\npurposes, has aroused my strong interests. Honestly speaking, HUMLOG grows on me\ntremendously and my interest increases substantially once I was exposed to the\nsubject. If I did not choose to pursue this major, I would never know how\ndifficult and challenging it actually is to rescue and alleviate an area under\ndisastrous impacts. Furthermore, through the view lens of HUMLOG, I am\nprofoundly grateful and appreciated of how privileged I am to live in such a\npeaceful and affluent society, where I have access to everything that I need\nwhile there are so many others around the globe are still suffering from the\ninaccessibility of basic demands such as food, clean water, clothes and shelter\ndue to the  severe consequences of\ndifferent disasters and conflicts.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The one\nlast point I would like to make is my overall experience at HUMLOG track over\nthe past three months. Three adjectives that can describe most of my experience\nhere are \u201cpassionate\u201d, \u201cinsightful\u201d, and \u201cexciting\u201d. Essentially, every course that\nI have attended so far, is very well-structured and establishes extremely solid\ntheoretical foundations, yet, practical implications to real-world scenarios so\nthat we \u2013 the students can have a better grasp of how to effectively apply\ntheories into practices. Besides, huge contributors to my amazing studying\nexperience are undoubtedly my professors at HUMLOG track. They are all at the\nforefront of their research field and passionate about what they are doing. More\nimportantly, they can always make the lectures become more vivid and exciting by\ngiving in so many thought-provoking examples and exclusive industry knowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
